Weinberg Takes a Walk on the Nightside!

Today, I've got one answer for two questions.

Many people have been wondering when they're going to see the creator-owned comics EIC Joe Quesada has been hinting at. Others have been wondering what writer Robert Weinberg will do now that David Tischman and Igor Kordey are coming onboard Cable in September. The answer to both is ... Nightside!

That's the name of the new four-issue mini-series award-winning horror novelist Robert Weinberg will launch along with penciler Tom Derenick -- who, to best bring this shadowy vision to life, will illustrate the scary story in what's called "gray tones." Click on the artwork, and you'll see the atmosphere Tom will bring to this monthly dose of horror.

On Oct. 24, you'll meet Sydney Taine, a detective by trade. But her investigations, and her clients, are far more dangerous than those of an ordinary private eye. Her work takes her into the darkest corners of society, to those places most people don't even know exist. Into the Nightside.

Sydney moves in a world of warring factions of supernatural creatures that call themselves "The Others." They appear to be human -- but behind the facade lie thirsts, passions and powers far beyond any normal human's. For you see, they've lived among us since before recorded history. Joining Sydney is her partner, Key "Ape" Largo, whose incredible intellect and heart are hidden in a massive body. Together, they stand between us and the forces of darkness concealed under the shade of night!

"Sydney Taine is a woman who walks the narrow path dividing good from evil, the gray line that separates the daytime from the Nightside," Weinberg said. "She's a detective, and she knows a lot of secrets concerning the living and the undead. But no one knows very much at all about Sydney other than that she solves crimes that ordinary crime-solvers can't. The Others avoid the police and politicians at all cost. Taine is one of the few humans they trust, and some of them wonder about her. A few elders speculate behind locked doors that perhaps Taine is yet a third life form, a race called 'The Players.' Could all life on Earth, both humans and Others, be mere pawns in a vast game for unknown stakes played by a select few like Sydney Taine? When asked, Taine laughs and walks away. But she never answers."

Brrrrr ... sounds chilling, Robert! But then again, I guess the warmth of the sun never reaches the Nightside!

WEINBERG, DERENICK PREVIEW NIGHTSIDE

Writer Robert Weinberg and artist Tom Derenick have provided their takes and an image from his new creator-owned series for Marvel, Nightside.

Here's how Weinberg describes the series:

"Meet Sydney Taine. She's a woman who walks the narrow path dividing good from evil, the gray line that separates the daytime from the nightside. Sydney's a detective and she knows a lot of secrets concerning the living and the undead. But no one knows very much at all about Sydney Taine.

"She stars in the new Marvel creator-owned series by Robert Weinberg titled Nightside, due to debut in October. Art is by major new discovery, Tom Derenick.

"Comparisons to what's being published today? There are none. Sydney's different. How? Join her in October to find out."

And here's Derenick's take on Nightside:

"The art style I'm using on this series is quite a bit different from what X-Men fans have seen from me in the past year. It's fully rendered shaded pencils. There won't be any inking just computer coloring over raw pencils. This kind of thing has been done on Aria for Avalon studios by Jaye Anacleto and also on the upcoming Vampirella series through Harris by Mike Mayhew.

"The difference is whereas to two incredible artists I just mentioned are going for photorealism in their art I'm trying to go for something a little more exaggerated. It will have a realistic feel to it but with more of the dynamics of Marvel's style of storytelling. I'm hoping to give comic fans something they've never seen before much in the same way Bob is in the story. Just something new and fresh.

"For those who aren't aware of this style, I developed it while doing pinups online over two years ago. The response to it was incredible and I'm hoping comicbook fans will like it just as much.

"When I started working for Marvel last year one of the first assignments I landed was a pinup for X-Men Millenial Visions for editor, Mike Marts which I did in this style. Since then I was kept pretty busy on the X-books and it wasn't until recently that the opportunity arose to apply this style to a project.

"I sent an email to Joe Quesada with a bunch of pieces of art done in this style and he liked it enough to send it around to his editors to see if anyone had anything they could use it on. Then I visited the offices to dicuss the possibility of doing something in this style. Mark Powers asked me if I'd be interested in doing an alternate red cover for "Search for Cyclops" #4, which unfortunately, due to a snafu in the solicitation for the book ended up not getting printed. These things happen sometimes.

"However, after talking with Bob, Mark approached me about whether I'd be interested in doing Nightside in this style. Bob and I had been talking about the series before that and I got a chance to read a draft of the script for issue one and it sounded like an incredibly cool concept. It was a mix of Avengers (Emma Peel), Dark City, Blade, the Matrix, Dracula, etc., and I loved what Bob has been doing on Cable, enjoyed working with him already on said title, so how could I pass. I accepted. I'm going to do my best to make Nightside as fun to look at as it will be to read."

GOOD NIGHTSIDE

Writer Bob (Cable) Weinberg has begun the promotion machine for his upcoming creator-owned series for Marvel, entitled Nightside. Debuting in October with art by Tom Derenick, the series first promo art features a character named Sydney Taine.

"She`s a woman who walks the narrow path dividing good from evil, the gray line that separates the daytime from the nightside," said Weinberg. "Sydney`s a detective and she knows a lot of secrets concerning the living and the undead. But no one knows very much at all about Sydney Taine.

"Comparisons to what`s being published today? There are none. Sydney`s different. How? Join her in October to find out."

According to Derenick, the promo image is exemplary of the what the entire book will look like "It`s all pencil (no inking) with some computer coloring and a little photo manipulation," said the creator.

Weinberg has previously offered more detailed description of the upcoming series…

"Who says man`s the only intelligent species on Earth? No, I`m not talking about dolphins or whales or even those monkeys they taught to play cards and read baby books. I`m talking the real things; beings who walk our streets, ride our cars, work, eat and sleep and do all the stuff that humans do - but that aren`t human. Who says?"

"They call themselves the Others," revealed Weinberg. "No one knows much about them. Their history is as dark and murky as our own. It doesn`t matter. What matters is that they`re here. They look like us, they act like us, and most people never suspect they`re not one of us. But, they`re different. They`re not human."

"The Others possess powers no mortal has, and oftentimes they are controlled by thirsts and passions and desires that are totally and absolutely alien. Some of them crave blood; others can change their shape; while still others can suck the soul right out of your body."

"Over the centuries, mankind`s developed folklore and legends about the Others - given them names like vampire and werewolf and ghoul and ghast and demon. But, they`re not so easily categorized. Each of them is different, just as each human is unique and special in their own way."

"Like humans, the Others prefer to socialize with their own kind. So they gather in clubs, in bars, in locations meant for them and no one else. Most of them sleep by day and party by night. They keep a low profile and hide in the darkest shadows. Our world of sunshine and faith and hope, they call `Dayside`. Their world, a place of shadows and darkness and terrors unseen, the world the Others call their own, they know as `Darkside`."

"Sydney Taine, tall, beautiful, sensual, is a female detective who walks on the Darkside. No one knows much about Taine other than she solves crimes that ordinary crime solvers can`t. The Others avoid the police and politicians at all cost. Taine is one of the few humans they trust, and some of them wonder about her. A few elders speculate behind locked doors that perhaps Taine is yet a third lifeform, a race called the Players. Could all life on Earth, both Humans and Others, be mere pawns in a vast game for unknown stakes played by a select few like Sydney Taine. When asked, Taine laughs and walks away. But she never answers."

"Weinberg`s new comic deals with Sydney Taine, and her partner, Ape Largo, perhaps the ugliest man alive, as they solve the crimes, conspiracies, and the unnatural disasters that all take place on the Darkside. Good and evil battle in this hidden society, but sometimes telling which is which isn`t going to be easy. Nothing is easy on the Darkside."

FIRST LOOK @ WEINBERG`S NIGHTSIDE

Cable writer Robert Weinberg recently gave X-Fan a look at a piece of promotional art for his Nightside creator-owned series, set to debut in October.

"Meet Sydney Taine," said Weinberg, introducing the lead character from the series originally called. "She`s a woman who walks the narrow path dividing good from evil, the gray line that separates the daytime from the nightside. Sydney`s a detective and she knows a lot of secrets concerning the living and the undead. But no one knows very much at all about Sydney Taine."

"Art is by major new discovery, Tom Derenick," continued Weinberg. "Comparisons to what`s being published today? There are none. Sydney`s different. How? Join her in October to find out."

Asked to describe his style on the book in more detail, and Derenick told X-Fan that it`s "quite a bit different" from what fans have seen of his work in the past.

"It`s fully rendered tonal pencils (no inking) much like what we`ve seen through Avalon Studios and Jay Anacleto on Aria, only a bit more exaggerated and dynamic," he said. "I`m not as concerned with being completely photorealistic, although it will be much closer than my regular style. The interiors will be computer colored and we`re still deciding what we`re going to do with the cover, but hopefully it will be a step beyond what Marvel fans and most comic book fans are used to seeing. The first promo piece also has some photo manipulation mixed in as well, which is something [series editor] Mark Powers and I are looking into trying with the covers. Overall it should look very cool."

"I developed the style while doing pinups online over two years ago," explained Derenick. "The response to it was tremendous and built me a fan base. Then I started working for Marvel. I did a pin-up for them in this style, but most of my work up to this point has been pen and ink comic book style, which I enjoy doing as well, however I was looking for an opportunity to use this style as well. Recently I visited the offices after showing the style to the EIC, Joe Quesada through e-mails. He liked it and send the art around to the editors to see if anyone had something special to use it on. Mark was one of the guys that did. The tone and theme of Nightside is perfectly suited for this look, and after having worked with Bob in the past and reading what I could find of his Cable run as well as what I`ve seen so far of this title I think comic book fans are about to be in for the ride of their life, and I`m glad to be a part of it."

Weinberg previously told X-Fan about the series in depth, back when it was under the working title of Darkside, saying, "Who says man`s the only intelligent species on Earth? No, I`m not talking about dolphins or whales or even those monkeys they taught to play cards and read baby books. I`m talking the real things; beings who walk our streets, ride our cars, work, eat and sleep and do all the stuff that humans do - but that aren`t human. Who says?"

"They call themselves the Others," revealed Weinberg. "No one knows much about them. Their history is as dark and murky as our own. It doesn`t matter. What matters is that they`re here. "The Others possess powers no mortal has, and oftentimes they are controlled by thirsts and passions and desires that are totally and absolutely alien. Some of them crave blood; others can change their shape; while still others can suck the soul right out of your body."

"It`s going to be a fun read, and I think its going to be something a lot different than what`s being published in comic books today," said Weinberg.
