ROLLING THE DICE
Unknown art today could be superstar art tomorrow It's no surprise that beautiful pages from folks like George Perez, Brian Bolland and Tim Sale can sell online for hundreds, nay, thousands of dollars. But so many people are buying art online these days, they're paying premium prices for the works of artists you've never heard of .
Artists who have never broken in or artists who may have dome some pro work but still have very low profiles (Like Tom Derenick, formerly of Malibu's Protectors, whose art is featured here) can make a few bucks online when, at conventions, they might not get may takers.
The upside for you, the consumer? These unknown artists could hit it big down the road - and you'll have have their work for cheap.
In the very same issue of Wizard, a side bar goes on to explain more about online art sales:
MERCH MADNESS It wasn't that many years ago that a certain artist wannabe sat at conventions, drawing free sketches to anyone who would pay attention. Than wannabe was Dawn Creator Joseph Michael Lisner - and those same sketches now trade in at the $400.00 realm!
If that seems odd, remember: He wasn't a big shot then. And in a world where a creator's popularity can suddenly explode, tomorrow's superstar could be online today.
One key player is Tom Derenick (Protectors, Star Trek), whose mind blowing original - and very racy - pencils of Wonder Woman, She-Hulk and more fetch $200 to $300 a pop on eBay. Derenick, who routinely posts two drawings a week on eBay, has become an online institution, often credited as "eBay's Tom Derenick."
